Ear, Nose & Throat (ENT)

This is a common procedure that is most often performed because of chronic sore throat or infection. The procedure may also be performed if tonsils and adenoids are too swollen and cause a breathing obstruction, including sleep apnea.

The procedure to remove tonsils and adenoids is performed under general anesthesia. It is usually done on an out-patient basis. Tonsils and adenoids are removed through the mouth. No skin incision is required.

Septoplasty is a surgery to correct a deformity in the nasal septum. Turbinectomy is the surgical reduction or removal of an enlarged turbinate (nasal tissue) inside the nose. Both surgeries are done mainly to improve airflow or improve sinus drainage.

Functional endoscopic sinus surgery is a minimally invasive technique used to restore sinus ventilation and normal function. The most suitable candidates for this procedure have recurrent acute or chronic infective sinusitis, and an improvement in symptoms of up to 90 percent may be expected following the procedure. Fiberoptic telescopes are used for diagnosis and during the procedure, and computed tomography is used to assess the anatomy and identify diseased areas. The procedure can be performed under general or local anesthesia on an outpatient basis, and patients usually experience minimal discomfort. The complication rate for this procedure is lower than that for conventional sinus surgery.

Stapedectomy is a surgical procedure in which the innermost bone (stapes) of the three bones (the stapes, the incus, and the malleus) of the middle ear is removed, and replaced with a small plastic tube surrounding a short length of stainless steel wire (a prosthesis).

A stapedectomy is performed to improve the movement of sound to the inner ear. It is done to treat progressive hearing loss caused by otosclerosis, a condition in which spongy bone hardens around the base of the stapes. This condition fixes the stapes to the opening of the inner ear, so that the stapes no longer vibrates properly. Otosclerosis can also affect the malleus, the incus, and the bone that surrounds the inner ear. As a result, the transmission of sound to the inner ear is disrupted. Untreated otosclerosis eventually results in total deafness, usually in both ears.

Uvulopalatopharyngoplasty (UPPP) is a procedure that removes excess tissue in the throat to make the airway wider. This sometimes can allow air to move through the throat more easily when you breathe, reducing the severity of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA).

Micro-Laryngeal Surgery is done to address problem in the vocal chords or a voice disorder. This is a Minimally Invasive Technique that helps in the correction of the voice disorder or problem in the larynx. It involves the removal of the unwanted and unnatural growth in the larynx such as cysts or polyps that may not respond to more conservative treatment and needs surgery.

Thyroid surgery is used to treat thyroid nodules, thyroid cancer, and hyperthyroidism. During this procedure, part or all of the thyroid gland is removed. An incision is made in the skin. The muscle and other tissues are pulled aside to expose the thyroid gland.
